It's not a sound issue - a person in the audience very well may not be able to hear the difference between live drums and a commercial-grade sample pack - it's a mental thing on the part of the musicians. In a live setting though, there is an energy to playing with a real drummer that you're going to have a very hard time replicating with a drum machine. Other musicians or production people, when listening critically, may be able to tell the difference, but on 'enjoyment' listening it won't generally jump out and slap them in the face, and everyone else probably wouldn't hear it unless you told them. It's one of those things (like autotune) that when done badly is obvious and cheesy, but is a lot more prevalent than people realize, because when done well it's nearly imperceptible.

Drum machines (or the software equivalent of drum machines, really) are used a lot for overdubs, spliced directly into the track over or instead of the live drummer, especially if it's a part the drummer had trouble with on multiple takes. Electronically played or triggered drums don't need to be relegated to the back of the mix. Dismissing "drum machines" entirely is a little shortsighted though. these are a couple of good ones that might open your eyes a little.

Not to mention these softwares contain huge packs of expertly recorded acoustic drums being hit at dozens of different velocities with different types of sticks. There's whole suites of drum softwares that allow you to calibrate and move mics around, tune drum heads, add effects etc.

I'm not sure what your experience with drum machines are, or the last time you've had any real experience with them but the technology just keeps getting better and better. I reckon you don't understand the entire breadth of what makes up a drum machine or what can be achieved with one. There's some folks that can do impressive things with "drum machines".
